Over the weekend, the Washington Daily News reported that State Treasurer Dale Folwell believes the voucher program needs accountability on par with public schools:

Anything that is getting a taxpayer dollar needs to be held to the same level of transparency, and same level of accountability,” Folwell said.

Other states that have already expanded vouchers are paying the price, with Arizona expecting to face a $400M shortfall in their budget. Rep. Reives has previously called for more oversight and accountability in state government, particularly regarding no-bid contracts in the budget.

“Public schools should not be placed into a different class than private institutions in terms of accountability and oversight, when both are receiving taxpayer dollars,” House Democratic Leader Robert Reives said. “This should not be a partisan issue. I agree with Treasurer Folwell: Entities receiving taxpayer money deserve scrutiny. North Carolinians deserve to know what their tax dollars are funding.”
